Course Description
This course is designed to educate entry-level students to the role of PLCs in automation engineering and on how to troubleshoot and diagnose controls related problems by navigating and monitoring TIA Portal software. The topics covered include PLC Hardware components, Input/Output Devices, Digital vs Analog Signals, PLC I/O electrical schematics, Profinet networks, connecting to an Siemens S7-1200/1500 series PLCs, navigating TIA Portal, and reading basic ladder logic programming.
Course Objectives
At the conclusion of this course students should be able to do the following:
• State the role of a PLC
• Identify and monitor the hardware components of a PLC
• Distinguish between all types of Devices
• Read a PLC I/O electrical schematic
• Connect to a Siemens S7-1200 and S7-1500 PLCs through Profinet
• Identify physical devices which are connected to the PLC by deciphering I/O schematics and relating them to corresponding data points in the PLC’s tag database
• Monitor tag values in PLC’s tag database and ladder
• Read basic ladder logic
• Uploading and saving a project
