Situational Leadership

Situational Leaders utilize an action-oriented framework that increases both the quantity and quality of performance conversations with their associates. This helps them to match an individual’s “performance level” of a specific task with the appropriate leadership style.

The Situational Leadership model helps leaders align their approach to the associate performing the task. In that regard it allows the leader and the follower to form a relationship around the work that needs to be done.

The four Situational Leadership styles are:

1. Directing (S1): High on directing behaviors, low on supporting behaviors.
2. Coaching (S2): High on both directing and supporting behaviors.
3. Supporting (S3): Low on directing behavior and high on supporting behaviors.
4. Delegating: (S4) Low on directing behavior and low on supporting behaviors.

 Learning Objectives

• • • • • • Identify an individual’s current development level and select an appropriate leadership style
          • Apply Situational Leadership in daily interactions through diagnosis, communication, application of leadership style and managing development and regression
          • Practice and use a variety of leadership styles
          • Learn a process for helping associates become self-motivated and self-directed
          • Lead team members more effectively by reaching agreements with them about their development level and leadership style needed to help them achieve goals
