This course is designed to educate entry-level students to the role of PLCs in automation engineering and on how to troubleshoot and diagnose controls related problems by navigating and monitoring TIA Portal software. The topics covered include PLC Hardware components, Input/Output Devices, Digital vs Analog Signals, PLC I/O electrical schematics, Profinet networks, connecting to an Siemens S7-300 series PLC, navigating Step 7, and reading basic ladder logic programming.

At the conclusion of this course students should be able to do the following: Identify and monitor the hardware components of a PLC

  • State the role of a PLC
  • Identify and monitor the hardware components of a PLC
  • Distinguish between all types of Devices
  • Read a PLC I/O electrical schematic
  • Connect to a Siemens S7-300 through Profinet and Profibus
  • Identify physical devices which are connected to the PLC by deciphering I/O schematics and relating them to corresponding data points in the PLC’s tag database
  • Monitor tag values in PLC’s tag database and ladder
  • Read basic ladder logic
  • Uploading and saving a project file

Prerequisites: Students are expected to familiar with the following: How to read a basic electrical schematic & a multimeter
