Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (4/8-5/8/24)

This course is a study of the geometric controls set forth in ASME standard Y14.5M-1994 – Dimensioning and Tolerancing.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of the course the student will demonstrate a beginner’s level ability to interpret a symbolic language used on engineering drawings to communicate geometric information.

Course Outline:

  • Datums – Constrained Motion; MMB and RMB related to Features of Size Datums
  • Feature Control Frame – Interpreting the symbols in each compartment.
  • Position – Basic Dimensions; Analysis of Material Condition Modifiers (MMC, LMC RFS)
  • Rule #1 – Implied Form Error if Size Only is Specified
  • Form & Orientation Controls – Definitions, Tolerance Zones, Inspection Practices
  • Profile & Runout – Definitions, Tolerance Zones, Inspection Techniques.
  • Modifying Symbols – Tangent Plane), Unequal, Projected and others.

Students must have taken Blueprint Reading or have the skillset before taking this class.
